Title: “SHIKATAGANAI!”を科学する (The Science of “Shikata ga nai!”)
Speakers:

Dr. Ryuichi Sada (The University of Osaka, Graduate School of Medicine / CiDER)
Dr. Yu Kanazawa (The University of Osaka, Graduate School of Humanities)
The Japanese expression shikata ga nai (roughly, "it can't be helped") can convey different emotions and meanings depending on the context. Drawing on psychological research, clinical medicine, and emotion studies, the three speakers will explore how this familiar expression relates to decision-making, patient–physician communication, acceptance, resignation, hope, and meaning-making in the face of difficulties and constraints.
Dr. Kanazawa will discuss the expression from the perspectives of emotion, yarigai (a sense of worth or fulfillment), and relevant previous research.
