Tentative Program
Symposium | 10:30–12:00
Teacher-Created Generative AI Feedback: Design Intentions and Implementation Strategies
「教員がつくる生成AIフィードバック:設計の意図と実装の工夫」
Speakers
Kei Okuzumi (Saitama University)
Ken Urano (Hokkai-Gakuen University)
Atsushi Mizumoto (Kansai University)
Symposium Overview
When instructors use ready-made generative AI tools, it can be difficult to control precisely what feedback learners see, when they see it, and how it is presented.
In this symposium, three educators who develop their own applications will explain how they have designed generative AI feedback for writing. They will share their design decisions, implementation strategies, trial and error, and practical lessons learned.
Through concrete examples, the symposium will explore the significance and possibilities of teachers themselves taking an active role in the design of AI-mediated feedback.
Speakers
Kei Okuzumi is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Saitama University. Before entering higher education, he taught English at public junior high schools in Saitama Prefecture for 21 years. His research interests include pedagogical grammar using imi-jun (“meaning order”), noun-phrase acquisition, and gamification in language-learning activities. He is also an editorial board member for the junior-high-school English textbook NEW CROWN (Sanseido) and received the MEXT Award for Excellent Teachers in 2014.
Ken Urano is Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at Hokkai-Gakuen University. His areas of expertise include second language acquisition and English language education. His research addresses the measurement of learners’ syntactic and morphological knowledge, task-based language teaching (TBLT), and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). His publications include Hajimete no Eigo Kyoiku Kenkyu and Eigo Kyoiku no Evidence, both published by Kenkyusha.
Atsushi Mizumoto is Professor in the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies at Kansai University. His research interests include pedagogical applications of corpora and AI, language-learning strategies, and measurement and assessment in language education. In recent years, he has actively developed and released his own web applications incorporating generative AI. He is President of the LET Kansai Chapter and Vice President of the Japan Association for English Corpus Studies.
Keynote Lecture | 15:40–17:10
Why Learn a Foreign Language Anyway?
「それでも外国語を学ぶのは何のため?」
Yoichi Watari (Hokkaido University)
Keynote Overview
What does it mean to teach foreign languages in an age when generative AI is readily available?
How should we respond when students ask, “Why do we still have to go to the trouble of learning English?”
In August 2026, Professor Watari published the book Soredemo Gaikokugo o Manabu no wa Nan no Tame? (“Why Learn a Foreign Language Anyway?”; Toyokan Publishing) for teachers who may find themselves confronting precisely these questions.
Rather than offering an AI-generated summary, this keynote will present the author’s own perspective. It will consider the relationship between foreign languages and technology from an educational perspective and reconsider the purposes of foreign-language—and particularly English-language—learning.
The lecture will then move beyond the question of “Why?” to consider how foreign-language education can help learners think about what comfortable and constructive communication means for both themselves and others, and use language skillfully to put that understanding into practice.
Speaker
Yoichi Watari is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education and Graduate School of Education, Hokkaido University. He received his PhD in Education from Hokkaido University and previously taught at Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology, Shizuoka University, and Chukyo University. His fields include educational methodology and English language education.
His recent publications include Soredemo Gaikokugo o Manabu no wa Nan no Tame? (Toyokan Publishing, 2026), Sensei, Eigo tte Naze So Oshierun desu ka? (co-authored, Hitsuji Shobo, 2026), and the Japanese translation of Gert Biesta’s work on educational research (Akashi Shoten, 2024).

Reception | 18:00–
After the conference, we will have a reception at Restaurant AOZORA on the Suita Campus.
AOZORA offers a wonderful panoramic view, including the rear side of the Tower of the Sun and the OSAKA WHEEL, the 123-meter Ferris wheel at EXPOCITY.
It should be a great place to continue conversations with colleagues after the conference. We hope you will join us!
The University of Osaka describes AOZORA as a restaurant with panoramic views extending across the surrounding region, while OSAKA WHEEL is currently advertised as Japan’s tallest Ferris wheel at 123 meters.
The following Facebook post gives a sense of the view from the restaurant:
