Presentation #1

Interactions between psychological autonomy and physiology: Implications for learning, skill development, and performance

 by Curtis J. Edlin (Kwansei Gakuin University)

Bio:
Curtis Edlin is a full-time Instructor of English as a Foreign Language at Kwansei Gakuin University. Within his 15+ years of teaching experience, he has taught for 13 years at universities in Japan, including eight years as a learning advisor, three of which he also served as an advisor educator. His primary areas of interest include autonomy (particularly in the Self-Determination Theory sense), motivation, and coaching/advising practices, especially with regard to how they affect learning, skill development, and performance. He holds an MATESOL from SIT Graduate Institute. He also spent two years training and serving as an emergency medical technician in the US, which further piqued his interest in physiological considerations related to learning and performance.

Developing learner autonomy in the classroom: Facilitating learners to become agents of their learning

   by Hisako Yamashita (Ritsumeikan University)

Bio:
Hisako Yamashita is an Associate Professor at Ritsumeikan University, Japan, and a former president of JASAL (the Japan Association for Self-Access Learning). She specializes in learning advisor training and in developing classroom activities to foster learner autonomy. Her current research interests include peer interactions in developing learner autonomy. She has published in New Ways in Teaching Speaking 2nd edition (TESOL, 2019), New Ways in Teaching Adults, revised (TESOL, 2015), 『英語学習手帳』 (KUIS Press, 2013-2015) and『英語教師のための自律学習者育成ハンドブック』(KUIS Press, 2021) with Satoko Kato. She holds an MA in Teaching Foreign Languages from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
