Presentation #1
Transformation of Learners through International Dialogue Mediated by Picture Books — A COIL Practice with Japanese and Indonesian High School Students
by Sachie Suzuki (Miyagino High School, Miyagi)
& Josephine Lenny (SMA Santo Paulus Pontianak Senior High School, Pontianak)
Drawing on their experience with the Art Mile international collaborative learning project, the presenters have been implementing international collaborative learning through COIL since 2024. Their approach incorporates students’ learning and expertise across different subject areas to deepen their understanding of others and themselves and to foster the ability to view themselves and others from multiple perspectives. In the 2025 academic year, Japanese and Indonesian high school students collaboratively created picture books using Canva, drawing on Indonesian students’ interest in Japanese art and the strengths of Japanese students specializing in art.
This presentation focuses on the “Hero Dialogue Picture Book” project and examines three aspects of the practice: (1) international dialogue mediated by picture books, (2) changes in students’ perspectives through dialogue and collaborative creation, and (3) the potential of art to support learners’ participation and self-expression. The presentation will also consider how connecting students’ learning to society may broaden their perspectives. The completed picture books are to be donated to children on an island in the Philippines and used as materials for English education, providing the high school students with an opportunity to connect their collaborative learning with a real-world social purpose.

Presentation #2
Developing Translation Appreciation Materials for Collaboration between Japanese and English Education: Using Badger's Parting Gifts
by Tomohiro Mochida (Hiroshima U. High School, Fukuyama)
https://mochisava.blogspot.com/
Translation has been neglected in language teaching since its shift toward communicative language teaching, which led to less attention to the pedagogical use of translation. Recently, however, some theorists have been supporting the use of translation in terms of translanguaging and mediation. This presentation shows the brief introduction of the theoretical background, followed by a few practices using Japanese literature works including stories and poetry. It aims to suggest the collaboration between L1 and L2 teachers in secondary schools.
